Pedestrian Fatalities Rise in South Carolina

By Personal Injury Lawyer on December 12, 2011

A rising number of pedestrian deaths is concerning South Carolina Highway Patrol. “We’ve had five killed here,” South Carolina Highway Patrol Lt. James Filyaw said. “There’s a lot of room for improvement. If you look at it statewide, it’s up 24 percent over the state.” During this time last year, there were 81 deaths, while this year there have been 101. Police have escalated enforcement by urging drivers and pedestrians to remain cautious. Many have been forced to use a bike or walk due to rising gas prices. Officials say the number of holiday shoppers along the streets is also concerning. Christmas vacation from school may also lead to a higher number of pedestrians, according to news reports. “Unfortunately, people are much more distracted this time of year,” Davis said. “But the probability (for a collision is much higher).”

As a Columbia auto accident attorney, I’m glad police are working on improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety. If you or a loved one were harmed in an accident, discuss your case with a personal injury attorney who can discuss your claim and work to defend your rights, along with answer any important legal questions you may have regarding your claim. A personal injury lawyer can help guide you through your case by assisting you with the legal processes associated with your case in order to reach the best possible outcome for your claim.
