4.5 million more Windstar vehicles are being recalled due to the possibility of overheating and causing a fire, representing the automakers eighth recall. 3.4 million additional vehicles are also being recalled that include the Ford Excursion, Explorer, Rangers, and various other vehicle model years that date back to 1992, according to news reports. “While the data show the majority of the vehicles being recalled do not pose a significant safety risk, we are recalling the vehicles to reassure customers and eliminate any future concerns,” a statement from Ford read. The problem arises if the switch leaks fluid, resulting in the burning of the antilock brake system, which may result in a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “The switch is only one component of Ford’s cruise control deactivation switch system and is not the root cause of the fires,” said Texas Instruments. Vehicle owners will be notified the end of the month. Ford recommends that owners park outdoors until their vehicle can be analyzed. “We are aware of a few allegations related to fatalities related to the switch fires. But none that have been confirmed at this point,” said Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood.
