The Food Safety Working Group recently released a report showing that food safety is getting better. “We’re well on our way to building a modern food safety system,” said Health and Human Service’s Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. The group was founded in 2009 to oversee President Obama’s food safety activities. Food safety has been a major issue for many years, and according to the Institute of Medicine, the Food and Drug Administration has not been preventing foodborne illness well enough.
The Food Safety Modernization Act improved the ability to detect outbreaks faster, and enforce safety at processing plants. The USDA created a policy that forces meat facilities to hold products until they can be determined safe enough for selling. The Centers for Disease Control’s report shows the rate of E. coli contamination lowering, but salmonella is still increasing. The Food Safety Modernization Act, a $1.4 billion bill, also gave the FDA authority to issue recalls if the company doesn’t recall the tainted food. Sellers and manufacturers are also now forced to send notices to all customers who purchased the recalled product, according to news reports.
