The state troopers patrolling the area of Patrol Troop 3 have witnessed nine deaths in nine days between Spartangburg, Oconee, Pickens, Greenville and Anderson counties. We are still in the “100 Deadly Days of Summer” period, and the last week has definitely lived up to it’s reputation. Labor Day weekend traditionally has the highest number of car accident fatalities out of the year, and the holiday weekend doesn’t ever officially kick off until 6pm this evening.
Yesterday morning, a 30 year-old woman from Liberty lost control of her 2002 Honda van as she traveled along U.S. 123. She left the road on one side, over-corrected, and unfortunately ran into a tree on the side of the highway. She was killed in the accident. On Wednesday, an 83 year-old man who was also from Liberty was killed in a separate car accident. When he attempted to make a left hand turn onto Highway 178, he collided with a Nissan passenger vehicle driven by a 35 year-old woman. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating these accidents.
As a South Carolina personal injury lawyer, I was encouraged to hear that traffic fatalities for the year are actually down by 78 deaths according to this article. Last year, there were 255 car accident fatalities within the first 92 days of the 100 Deadly Days of Summer, and this year there have only been 177 thus far. But, that’s still a number that everyone would still love to see drop dramatically. The S.C. Highway Patrol urges other drivers to dial *HP if they notice another driver that is speeding, reckless or possibly under the influence.
