A roadside safety check point in Anderson County resulted in a man attempting to ram a South Carolina Highway Patrol and run down a trooper, said the Department of Public Safety. All lanes of Interstate 77 have reopened following a collision this morning. South Carolina Highway Patrol reopened the lanes after the deadly wreck involving three cars. One 78-year-old driver from Rock Hill was killed while the other was injured. Two cars hit the overpass at the Sutton Road Exit.  According to news reports, the medical condition of the other victim in this collision is not known at this time. They were airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Late Monday, a man from Prosperity was killed when he collided near Chapin. The single-vehicle pickup-truck crash happened around 10:40pm when the 56-year-old was driving his 2006 Dodge Ram and veered from the left side of the road. A man from Maryland was rushed to the hospital late on Thursday after losing control of his motorcycle and colliding on Interstate 26 in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. A newly released study shows that texting while driving has gone up 50% in the past year. Two of every ten drivers admit to texting or sending emails while driving. The study was conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration by observing drivers at intersection. Around 1% of drivers were using hand-held devices, up from .6% the previous year. Drivers using headsets increased to .9%, up from .6%. A national telephone survey revealed that 18% of drivers say they’ve texted while driving. Among drivers aged 21-24, half say they’ve texted, according to news reports. Most drivers also say they will not only answer a call while driving, but continue to talk on the phone. A spokesman for the Governors Highway Safety Asssociation said the increase is worrysome. “It is clear that educational messages alone aren’t going to change their behavior,” he said. “Rather, good laws with strong enforcement are what is needed. Many drivers won’t stop texting until they fear getting a ticket. The increase shows what an uphill challenge distracted driving remains.”

A red vehicle drove off the road and landed in a lake Wednesday afternoon, reported Beaufort County sheriffs. The vehicle was located by authorities, and a dive team searched for the driver. The vehicle was pulled from the lake and an 82-year-old from Bluffton was found inside the vehicle. No indications of foul play were found, and the crash remains under investigation by Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Beaufort County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
