Smucker’s Natual Peanut Butter Chunky is undergoing a recall because it may be contaminated with salmonella. 16 ounce jars of the product with specific UPC and production codes, best-by date of August 3 or August 4, 2012 are included in the recall. Only the chunky variety of peanut butter is included in the recall. The recalled item was purchased by customers between November 8-17, 2011. No other JM Smucker Company products are included in the recall. There have been no reported illnesses, however the recall was made as a precautionary measure. Customers who purchased this item are urged to throw it out as soon as possible and get in touch with the company for a replacement, according to news reports.

Contamination Concerns Prompt Rite Butter Cookie Recall

In a news release Saturday, Rite Aid announced, in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the voluntary recall of Christmas cookies due to the possible presence of the microorganism Bacillus cereus.

Subject to recall are about 85,000 12-ounce tins of butter cookies distributed by the retailer under the Rich Fields brand. The cookie tins feature either Christmas designs or a decorative castle and have the UPC codes 01249596519 and 88411804619. Bacillus cereus infection can lead to diarrhea, nausea and/or vomiting. More serious heath consequences are unlikely. The recall came about after quality testing was conducted on the affected product due to an uncharacteristic odor.

Customers who have purchased the recalled cookies should not eat the baked goods. The cookies can be returned to any Rite Aid store for a full refund. The company is contacting consumers who purchased the cookies using their wellness+ card to notify those customers of the recall.

Undeclared Milk Allergen Spurs Brewer’s Yeast Tablet Recall

In a news release Wednesday, NOW Foods announced, with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the voluntary recall of certain lots of brewer’s yeast tablets due to the presence of undeclared milk allergen.

Subject to recall are 10 grain, 650 mg brewer’s yeast tablets in 200-count and 500-count bottles. The recalled nutritional supplements contain undeclared milk allergen, which, if consumed by persons allergic or sensitive to milk, can cause a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction. The products were distributed worldwide.

The recalled product numbers are 2410 (200-count bottles) and 2412 (500-count bottles). For product number 2410 the affected U.S. lot numbers are 1334119, 1354098, and 1362375. For product number 2412, the affected U.S. lot numbers are 1347607, 1334773, and 1358774.

Consumers who purchased the recalled tablets may return the product to the place of purchase or NOW Foods for a full refund. No receipt is necessary to receive the refund.

Decomposition Prompts Recall of Frozen Ground Tuna

In a news release Wednesday, Osamu Corporation announced, with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the recall of frozen ground tuna due to decomposition and elevated levels of histamine.

Subject to recall are up to 1,800 cases of the tuna with the lot number 7013. The recalled tuna may have decomposed meat, which poses the risk of histamine formation. Ingestion of histamine from food can lead to a variety of symptoms including facial swelling, a tingling or burning sensation in the mouth, hives, rash, itchy skin, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.

The recall was initiated in response to testing done by the FDA that came back positive for decomposition in several samples and histamine in samples from one retail location. The recalled tuna was shipped to three distributers, two of which have sushi franchises in grocery stores.

Consumers who have purchased the frozen ground tuna should return it for a full refund. Anyone who is concerned whether sushi purchased contains the ground tuna should consult with the store where it was purchased.

CDC Update: 100 Sickened, 18 Dead from Tainted Cantaloupe

In an update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the federal health agency announced that to date, 100 people had been infected with Listeria from tainted cantaloupes from Colorado’s Jensen Farms and that an additional 18 individuals have died from the infection, report news sources.

The CDC is calling the rash of Listeria infections the deadliest food borne illness outbreak in the last decade. Illnesses began around July 31, 2011.

Listeria infection can lead to listeriosis, which is uncommon; however, it is a serious, and in some cases fatal, illness, especially in elderly or frail people, children, and people with compromised immune systems. Symptoms include fever, headache, stiffness, abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea. Among pregnant women, Listeria infection can lead to stillbirths and miscarriages.

Bulk Soybean Products Recalled Due to Salmonella Concerns

In a news release Tuesday, Thumb Oilseed Producer’s Cooperative announced, with knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, that it is recalling over 2,123,320 pounds of soybean products due to concerns about Salmonella contamination.

Subject to recall are 2623 40-pound bags and 360 1500-pound totes of soybean flour and 924 0.08-ton loads of bulk soy meal. The recalled soybean products were distributed to U.S. wholesalers in Illinois, Vermont, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New Hampshire. The products were also distributed to wholesalers in Canada. The news release did not mention whether the recalled soybean products were ultimately destined for retail consumers.

Salmonella infection is potentially fatal and can lead to fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Those most at risk of infection are the elderly, children and people with compromised immune systems.

80,000 Pounds Beef Recalled Due To E. Coli Concerns

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that approximately 80,000 pounds of beef products have been recalled due to possible E. coli contamination, report news sources.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced that Manning Beef, a California-based farm, initiated the recall following a number of positive E. coli test results. No reports of illness in connection with the recall have been made.

The recalled beef products were all produced on September 23, 2011 and include:

  • Combo bins of BroPack Beef Manufacturing Trimmings, 65/35, 50/50 or 85/15
  • Combo bins of Paso Prime Beef Manufacturing Trimmings, 65/35, 50/50 or 85/15.
  • 30 and 60 pound boxes of primal cuts, subprimal cuts and boxed beef.

Foreign Matter Concern Spurs Recall of Kraft Instant Pasta

According to news reports, the possible presence of “small, thin wire bristle pieces” has prompted Kraft Food Global Inc. along with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to recall the food manufacturer’s Velveeta Shells & Cheese Single Serve Microwaveable Cups.

Subject to recall are approximately 137,000 cases of of the instant pasta and cheese food product. The recalled product was manufactured at Kraft facilities in Lakeville, MN, and Champaign, IL, and shipped to retailers throughout the country.

No injuries or illnesses have been reported in connection to the foreign matter issue. Consumers are warned not to eat the recalled pasta, but rather return it to the place of purchase for either exchange or a full refund.

Salmonella Risk Prompts Pull of Organic Grape Tomatoes

In a news release Wednesday, Andrew Williamson Fresh Produce announced, with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a voluntary recall of one lot of organic grape tomatoes due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The possibly tainted tomatoes are sold under Limited Edition and Fresh and Easy labels and are packaged in 10.5 oz plastic “clam shell” containers. The UPC code 033383655925 appears on the front of the package, below the barcode. The recalled tomatoes were distributed to 18 U.S. states including South Carolina.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled tomatoes are urged not to consume any of the remain product and to discard any remaining tomatoes. Retailers are urged to make sure none of the recalled produce is on store shelves.
