They could face a $10,000 fine and as many as 10 years in prison if there is a fatal collision. One particular collision involving a 22-year-old who had high blood alcohol content and was texting previous to the collision. 4.5 million more Windstar vehicles are being recalled due to the possibility of overheating and causing a fire, representing the automakers eighth recall. 3.4 million additional vehicles are also being recalled that include the Ford Excursion, Explorer, Rangers, and various other vehicle model years that date back to 1992, according to news reports. “While the data show the majority of the vehicles being recalled do not pose a significant safety risk, we are recalling the vehicles to reassure customers and eliminate any future concerns,” a statement from Ford read. The problem arises if the switch leaks fluid, resulting in the burning of the antilock brake system, which may result in a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “The switch is only one component of Ford’s cruise control deactivation switch system and is not the root cause of the fires,” said Texas Instruments. Vehicle owners will be notified the end of the month. Ford recommends that owners park outdoors until their vehicle can be analyzed. “We are aware of a few allegations related to fatalities related to the switch fires. But none that have been confirmed at this point,” said Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood.

The 2004 Ford Freestyle and Mercury Monterey vans are being investigated for reportedly faulty seat anchors which do not secure the third row of seating properly. The NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigations claims there were seven reports of rear seat anchors separating from the wheel well. The Ford Freestyle and Mercury Monterey vans driven in “salt belt” states are also affected by corrosion of rear wheel wells. These are areas where de-icing chemicals are used on the roads to help with traction in the snow. An official investigation into defective vehicles is being conducted, and will help determine if an official recall will be made, according to an NHSTA investigation. Investigations may also reveal further defects in the vehicles caused by corrosion and faulty seat anchors, according to news reports.
