The subject of a high-speed chase Friday night in Greenville County was found dead of injuries suffered in a single-vehicle crash soon after the chase was called off for safety reasons, say news reports.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at about 6:50 p.m. when a 2004 Crown Victoria that had been traveling eastbound on Henderson Avenue went off the road and struck multiple trees. Authorities believe the driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old Greenville man, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash.
Just prior to the crash, the vehicle had been involved in a high-speed chase after a Greenville County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to execute a traffic stop. Instead of yielding, the vehicle lead authorities on a chase that reached speeds over 100 miles per hour. One speeds reached that high, the chase was called off due to safety concerns.
The driver died at the scene of blunt force trauma as a result of the vehicle striking multiple trees, said a Greenville Coroner’s Office representative. It is not known why the driver attempted to evade authorities.
