An elderly woman was killed in a train accident when a car driven by her grandson was struck, according to news reports.
The fatal accident occurred around 11:15 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 601 and Sellers Avenue in Orangeburg, according to news reports. An 82-year-old woman was a passenger in her grandson’s car when he was driving toward the tracks. The grandson reportedly passed another vehicle yielding the oncoming northbound Norfolk Southern train, attempting to beat the locomotive.
As he attempted to cross the tracks, his 1992 Nissan sedan got stuck on the tracks. The man reportedly was able to get out of the car and ran away before the collision.
“The train hit the driver’s side of the vehicle and pushed it about 80 yards before coming to a stop. (The grandmother) was unable to get out of the car and was ejected, officials said. She died at the scene,” according to news reports.
It is unclear if any charges will be filled for the fatal collision. The Orangeburg Department of Public Safety Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident.
As an Orangeburg car accident attorney, I’m saddened to hear about this train accident. My condolences are with this family during this difficult time. I urge drivers to always follow railroad crossing signs and never attempt to beat a train.
